Individual Learning Space
Individual learning spaces can be defined as the space in which an individual can concentrate and engage in learning.The individual learning space is unique to the individual and everyone has their own way in which they prefer to learn. Children prefer to learn in a variety of different ways from an extremely quite corner with no distractions to a area where there is substantial noise and others around. It all comes down to the individual person, teachers need to consider students individual learning spaces and adapt them into the classroom routines where possible. As a pre service teacher my list of learning spaces are; the university, the classroom (PRAC), studying at home in my personal study area and online with the discussion of university with peers.
There are a number of strengths and weakness that surround this particular learning space and they are they following;
Strengths-
Weaknesses-
Curriculum and pedagogy-
As students go through school they "develop personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves, manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively (ACARA(1), 2012)." Teachers need to enable students the opportunity to reach these aspects that have been identified in ACARA, this can be reached through the child's individual learning space. Enabling them to work at their own pace to achieve the acquired standards. Students need to learn the ability to self discipline, set goals and work independently this can be done through enabling students to work in their own space that suits their learning style.
Teacher and Students
The individual learning space is important as its your own personal learning space and it will not be the same as another. Its beneficial for your learning to make your space yours and somewhere were you can go to conduct your learning. Teachers need to acknowledge this and enable students to work in these particular spaces. A child might not want to be sitting next to anyone as they feel they get distracted when sitting next to another, this is a learning space that is easy to accommodate for as a teacher. Within a classroom there may have to be compromise from teacher and students as not all individual learning space will easily adapted to the classroom. Students individual learning spaces need to be productive and enable to engage into the learning.
Although this learning space is important some students may not know where or what the individual learning space is and it can be something the teacher can help the student with. By offering them a number of areas to work individually this may give the students a better idea on what type of environment they best learn in.
